An Odd Rumour?
Ive heard a very odd rumour on the grape vine. Don’t know how much credit to give it but piecing things together could be realistic.
We apparently look like selling Smudge to the Toffees for £3 million… I have heard about a possible deal involving us signing David Healy from Fulham for £1.5 million. Now he has more legs and a possible better eye for goal. Hasn’t set the world alight at Fulham but in a better team may be capable of more goals. He is his international record scorer scoring some amazing goals.
I would rather do this and have someone who is backup to Owen and Co. who is capable of scoring a goal but realises he’ll be behind them. He as more legs as well for running about. He’d probably not even be half the wages of Smith and would be half the cost effectively replacing Smith with a more effective player for us.
Add to this the fact that Andy Johnson has just signed for Fulham and you could get 2+2=4.
Interesting one and just thought I would post it up here to see what you guys think?
Here is a clip or what he is capable of…

Absolutely. If improving the squad can cost less money then it’s a no brainer really.

I look at it this way. We are 3/4 quality signings away. If we can make them and any other signings are to back the first 11 up then great we will fly. Looking at it I would like the following to happen. Sign Coloccini and Cuellar (if available), Warnock, Roque Santa Cruz (worth a bid) and a playmaker through the middle. I am not going to quote a name on the final one because quite frankly its a hard one. Whos available and at a realistic price. That would leave us a squad of roughly:
Given
Harper
Krul
Forster
Enrique
Warnock
Taylor
Coloccini
Cuellar
Faye
Bassong
Beye
Edgar
Cacapa
Butt
Geremi
Duff
Milner
Guthrie
(NEW PLAYMAKER)
Gutierrez
Barton
N’Zogbia
Owen
Martins
Viduka
Santa Cruz (Ameobi out)
Healey?? (REPLACEMENT SMITH)
Carroll
That pool of players would be enough for a top 8 finish. We aren’t a million miles away from a squad which would be pretty good. I would really like to see Owen signed up though as he really was the reason we didnt get relegated last season and by far our best player in our squad.
I would be very happy with that squad. What about you guys whats your thoughts?
All this stuff about us not spending much… If Coloccini is signed hes our most expensive defender ever… We’ve signed Guthrie and Gutierrez already. I think very clever moves so far. I don’t think its a case of money. Its look increasingly like its a case of if the right player is available they’ll make a play. The media as ever just stiring stuff and serving up old quotes…

wow, looking at that ’squad’ we are only about 3/4 players short! at least we all agree that an attacking midfielder is needed desperatley! i’m in the same boat as you Toon, i know we need one, just have no clue as to who.. i wouldnt be surprised if we sign an unknown from one of the upper leagues in Europe, i just hope we sign one!! as for smith for healy, i wouldnt be against it, but i doubt we’ll get 3 mill for a striker that never scores!

Ive been shocked at some of the deals they’ve pulled off tbh in terms of selling players. Id be pleased with £3 million though. I would have liked the boy to come good but I don’t think we can actually take that risk. He’s on too big a salary. We need players who dont need confidence rebuilt.
