I'm with Toon - I think this has been planned for months and as a result there's be a flawless transition to the new guy, who will be just as good - if not better - than Mort. I agree though, Mort did a cracking job and I'd have happily had him at the club for years.

As for Barton Wes, I know what you mean, the sympathy doesn't go that far for him. However he's a human being and you can't hang people any more, so I'd rather he was rehabilitated than left to rot and fight for the rest of his life. Either way, if he comes back to the club he can kiss his afternoons goodbye, he'll be doing that many school and community visits to "teach people the error of his ways"... Fair play too...

I think he was brought in to help steady the ship initially but was always going to leave as his post at Freshfields was left open. He took leave. I think he did it as a favour to Ashley. Now its settled and they have the setup behind the scenes Mort is now being allowed to return. I actually think we'll see more of Ashley taking on the club a bit more next season. Could be interesting but Newcastle now has a structure of real proven business men around it and they look as though they looking in the right areas when it comes to on the pitch. Im not worried at all.

Possible rehabilitation is one thing but I can't feel bad for anyone never mind someone earning sixty thousand pounds every week and not considering his responsibility to do something like that.

Anyway, I'm reading Mort looks like leaving. Any thoughts? I'm dissapointed if that's true as I think he seems the professional that fat freddie never was.

Toon's right:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/may/21/newcastleunited.premierleague
Newcastle will probably wait until the Dabo verdict before making a decision on his future.
In Barton's defence, he's been good as gold since the attack. I genuinely hope he can be rehabilitated into a decent citizen and player... Several player have been done (and sent down) for a number of ugly crimes, although Barton is a bit of a special case even by those standards.
I'd give him one last chance - if he messes that up though, he'll go down for so long though that Newcastle will have to ditch him, if nothing else his sentence would probably be longer than his contract...

His club said in a statement: "Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today.

"The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."

Every possibility but I think it will depend on the Dabo case. I think the signing from man city will have had a clause with regards to him going down for THAT case not another one. If he gets time for that one then I think the club will cut and run.

I do feel sorry for the lad... I get the impression he was practically dragged up and obviously has a natural anger problem. Plus he's now going to get some rather serious attention from the other inmates.

I agree entirely that as a grown up man he has to take responsibility for his own actions, but I just hope he gets some rehabilitation in there and comes out a more decent member of society, whether it's at Newcastle United or not.

Do you think there's any chance he'll be dumped by the club?

Exactly Snick, this makes little difference in a way - we need two new midfielders and they need to be of the quality that they would fit into the first team pretty much straight away (and hopefully would raise the standard, in which case why buy them?).

He stands trial for the training ground incident at the end of June. I'm not sure, but they might allow the sentences to run concurrently, or they might add it onto the end of his current sentence. I wouldn't be amazed if it's the latter.

I hope he's got access to a gym in there...

His trial for the other charges have still to happen and with maximum penalties it's entirely possible we could have seen the last of JB already. His on the pitch performances have been much much improved but justice must be served. I agree that two CM guys need to be brought in if possible. JB has no-one but himself to blame.
