Newcastle United Review: End Of Season 07/08
Well yet another dramatic year is over in the history of Newcastle United. We never have it easy do we?
First up Roeder was shot of by Shepherd to be replaced by Big Head Sam Allardyce. The Halls are then bought out by mysterious billionaire owner Mike Ashley, sports retail giant… Who?
Ashley then goes on to oust Shepherd from draining any more money from the Newcastle coffers and take full control of Newcastle United - in the process removing it from the stock market… Yippee!! Of course that was when the wheels started to come off in the good old round 1 Keegan days - having to sell Ferdinand to balance the books? EEK!
Instantly rumours start of Allardyce not being Ash’s man at the same time as BSA bleats on about not getting any money to sign enough **cough rubbish** players (nice move Ashley). Ashley wanted to conduct a thorough review of the club realising he had to clear in excess of £100 million worth of debt! Great move by Ash to secure the clubs future and not trust BSA when his player judgement span to spending £6million + £60k+ a week on Smith instead of signing Elano when he had the choice? Who would have been next? Nolan? Davies? We weren’t Bolton and were never going to be!
After a great start with an away victory against BSA’s former club Bolton sticking Sammy Lee in the myer early on, we went on to supposedly have one of our better starts to the season. At one point **cough very early on** being top of the league. Yes the football had changed.. but we were getting results.. Wasn’t to last for long though.
Soon after the start of the season many realised BSA’s tactics just wouldn’t go down well with the Geordie faithful. Lets null the other team, defend and pinch it by packing a midfield of slow work horses and not supporting our talented strikers so much so that they then want to leave. Oh then I can spend a fortune on Davies because I had just give him a new contract at Bolton along with the rest of the huge backroom staff I had brought in.
It started when at home against Villa we lacked any chances and stuck 5 in a midfield effectively boring Viduka up top after a great performance against Bolton away. A game tbh had we went for it could have won. Still it was an unbeaten start to the season with a naff goalless draw.
The alarms just started to sound once we give Derby 3 points of the first 4 we’d give them all season; in a season when they became the Premier Leagues worst points scoring team ever with 11 - yes thats right beating Sunderland… Thats right we give them a whopping 36.36363636……% of their points ALL SEASON! A team which went out to null a Derby team. Derby couldn’t play football in the first place? Why go out to stop them you hear every Geordie ask?
So we decided well it takes time. The papers seem to decide it takes about 5 years backing BSA’s claims. But the football was to get worse… and worse… and worse… when we got to a point we did not really ever test the other teams goal when we had about £40 million pounds worth of strike force. But apparently cleansheets win games? Im sorry but lets correct this one now. Not scoring goals loses you games. Scoring goals gives you a chance at getting 3 points instead of 1! Fortune always favours the brave and if your attacking a team you can’t be attacked so you don’t have to defend. Something quite clearly BSA could not get right niether. What did he come out saying? Oh the worst thing ever… “I don’t trust these players with my future.”
Sorry self promoting big head but the players didn’t trust you with their futures. They wanted their futures away from this club. Something didn’t smell right and it wasn’t the pies.
Shortly after the Stoke away match in the FA Cup Sam thought he was preparing for a match and low and behold Ash had given him enough time. He’d smelt what the wind was bringing and it weren’t Premier League football. It was the kind of stuff you drink in the school cantine as a kid… Panda Pop! Ashley along with the savy Geordie fans had enough and got shot of the waste of space. But he did get a good lumper to send him off to play golf with Fat Fred at Sandy Lane, Barbados. By gum they must have had a chuckle at how much money they’d drained the club and Ashley of.
So BSA had played the easiest start to a season we’d ever had and totally mashed it up.
Who to come in? Redknapp…. Nooooo another self promoter who did well to spin that he was perfect and got a nice wage rise out of it. Yes he went on to win the FA Cup fair play but he would not have been given time had results not changed instantly.
Now on the other hand one name would get time. One we didn’t expect… One that as soon as you heard the hairs on the back of your neck stood up. I remember the moment clearly. It had every other fan in the country and even across the globe talking about it.
Yes KK the Messiah was returning. Amazing reception from the media considering this wasn’t a big club according to them? They were hoping for a ball. The knives to be out as soon as possible and by gum they were when he had to take on some of the hardest fixtures you could get. Of course we werent going to pick up results in those games but they bleated on the Geordies wanted him sacked? Did they? Or was that their decision from way down in the capital that we were thinking that.
We all had faith even if he took us down. I know I would have stuck by him. He talks our language, plays our football and treats us with respect.
The Messiah might have been out the game a while but after a few games signs started to show improvement and players were making the right noises. It continued and shortly after a game against Blackburn from which we were robbed in daylight we seemed to realise we were a team again.
Yes the wheels fell off a little bit at Liverpool but as soon as we faced Birmingham we turned a corner. That first point came then the confidence was back. Little Michael Owen and his new captaincy seemed to start getting service. He went on to score 7 goals in the remaining league games to help us to safety including 2 against the scum.
Anyone who questions Owen is quite clearly an idiot as he is our best player by a country mile. Yes we need to keep him fit though.
So we went on a nice little run to secure our future in the Premier League and place as top dog in the North East with equalling our worst ever performance in the Premier League… Thats worth a chuckle to rub it in with the Smogs and Mackems.
We then went on to come up with our performance of the season against Spurs away from home to come from behind and beat them 4-1. What a game it was. It followed with a win against Reading in which we now seemed to be full of confidence and any thoughts of relegation were being banished.
Shortly after it followed an amazing atmosphere in the Tyne/Wear derby (yes I missed that one boooooo
) but what a game. Owen coming up with 2 goals to secure our status as top dog along with bragging rights for another season.
The season shortly after kind of died out against Chelsea and Everton but it did look promising for next season. We are heading in the right direction again now that we have a new rudder and captain.
Whatever next season brings, more soap story lines probably, more bad publicity? more hostile takeovers, who knows… We know under KK it wont be boring and hopefully for all the right reasons. Now that the media have been unable to get a story out of him falling on his sword. We don’t care what they think.
What are they clinging to at the moment? Boardroom unrest with the scheduled departure of Chairman Chris Mort. Players not being offered new contracts? Whatever we don’t care. Our skin is tougher now and we couldn’t give two hoots what you think.
Bring on 2008/2009 - its gonna be a better story.

Great stuff Toon, that’s our season in a nutshell!
Sorry I’m not on much, hand in my final uni work for my degree in a week so it’s desperate stuff! Still, interesting to see us trialing this Achille Emana, it looks like a genuine link. Big strong box-to-box midfielder, hopefully a more diligent version of Barton with a small price tag… These are the sort of signings we’ve been after for a long time! I obviously have no idea if he’s any good, but it’s great to see we’re looking to sign big talent, not big names…
