Interesting post Simo and some great points with regards to Shearer being a no. 2. I think if Shearer did come in he'd want to be no.1 and it down to him whether he does a good job or not.

On Van Gaal I don't see why not? He put himself forward for the England job but everyone does coz you get paid so much lol! Van Gaal would be interested. I think he realises he is due something new after being at AZ for so long. I don't know with the size of them etc whether he can take them any further than he has. Could be a good time to approach.

Im not completely against Deschamps and actually had a cheeky punt on him when he was 50 - 1 :P Hes managed quite a few big clubs now but my only worry is and not 100% on this is that he signed Boumsong for Juventus :-P Copybook blotted instantly :)

Looks like it's not him, but more likely might be Deschamps. Problem is I've never liked the guy, can't say why, just never took to him. Still, we'll see.

As for Shearer coming in as a number 2, I don't know if it would work. If I was the manager I'd worry about him being there - people would always look at you as a temporary appointment, simply there to fill in until Shearer thought he was ready. Plus, what happens if it doesn't work out with the manager and he does a bad job, eventually getting himself sacked? Would Shearer's reputation be tarnished? Would everyone want someone that was part of the old, bad regime coming through to take the hotseat, even if it was the legend himself? Questions questions...

I still want Van Gaal, but can't see it happening. I was thinking about it today, the main reason I can think of for him going to such a small league is because he wants to be back in his home country. Otherwise why wouldn't he be managing in Spain, Italy, Germany or the UK by now?

I agree with you Simo. In our current situation there is not very many better feasible options than Houllier/Shearer. It could be a way of Shearer getting into the club and gaining the experience needed for a smooth transition. I agree on Houllier being able to bring in good young french talent and that we should focus on a long term planning which includes young players coming through. Houllier certainly has a big black book of contacts and thats where Shearer would struggle if on his own. I think what goes against Keegan is he didnt have the best record of stability and handling youth talent. I don't think I would be dead against this partnership. I think it might well be our best option.

What I will say for Houllier is that he (I think) won 5 pieces of silverware in 6 years, at a club with a similar gate and income to us. If he's got Shearer working alongside him he could get us back up there, winning things... Plus having worked as Technical Director of the French team he'll know all of the up-and-coming young players and will be able to bring in the right man to get our academy back on track (which Ashley wants to see producing players again, as you can see from us having signed three young players in the past couple of weeks). I can see the downsides of him, but I can think of a lot worse than appointing him...
