Who Should Be Captain?
One of Keegans first jobs will be in deciding who should be the next Newcastle United Captain. On Wednesday night it was Shay Given. Against Man United it was Alan Smith. Previously it had be Geremi. But who do you think should become Captain?
I would personally hand the armband to Stephen Taylor. Yes hes young but he should be given the chance with his passion and being a geordie coming through he youth ranks. One of Keegans other first jobs should be to tie Taylor down to a long term deal as well.

Butt for a little longer I think, then Taylor. Might be worth giving him the armband once or twice at some point just to make sure he knows he’s important to the club. Couldn’t agree more about getting him signed up though, we need him tied down as soon as humanly possible… I’d be willing to lose out on another signing if it meant we kept him, he’s a massive player for us and could be our own Terry/King…

Looks as though hes give it to Owen in a big to keep him happy and stop the media jumping on his autobiography. Hes certainly a world class player when you watch him for a full 90 mins. A fully fit Michael Owen will get 15+ goals in the league with the right service. Hopefully this will be a little bit extra to keep him off the sick bed. If he had Viduka alongside him instead of Owen I think it might have been the difference to open the Bolton defence and get 3 points at the weekend.

Owen’s not a captain…..
Christ, the guy isnt even a decent striker at the moment.
I think Butt should be given the captaincy, at least for now. You can see he’s a natural leader, but his temperament is questionable.
Taylor is a prospect, but I think the priority is to get him into a new contract before anything else !!!

I think the problem with Butt is that he isn’t guaranteed to play specially under KK now if he brings in signings. I think it has to be someone who is going to play most games and is here long term. Butt yes has just signed an extension but thats til end of next season. I think we need someone now who is going to have it for years to come. Butt is getting old and after next season he won’t be at Newcastle. Its just the way I see things playing out. Owen is a striker and in KK’s eyes what he likes but hes one of those players that if kept fit is gonna be on the team sheet week in week out. Probably one of the first when fit. Its just a matter of keeping him fit and giving him a supply line. I think he was all over the pitch trying on Sat and against Stoke. If hes captain long term I wouldnt be against it personally.

True, as long as Owen is committed to the team… If the players feel that their captain is looking for a way out it’ll be demoralising. Then again if Keegan players to Owen’s strengths Owen might have a great time playing here. Let’s be honest, every player loves playing attacking football - it’s the game you naturally revert to when you play as a kid - but for strikers it must be like all of your Christmases have come at once. If we can get to a position of being able to win something he might well feel like its worth him sticking around.

Sorry, “plays”, not “players”

I think Owen gets a lot of flak to be fair. As long as we play to his strengths as a team overall and are going in the right direction I think Owen would be happy to stay as long as we develope.
